What it is
An ingrown nail happens when the nail edge curves into the skin beside it — almost always the big toe — causing pain, swelling, and sometimes infection. Tight shoes, improper trimming, and genetics all play a role. Hangnails are smaller but can open the door to a painful infection around the nail called paronychia. Both are quick to treat when handled properly, and miserable to ignore.
