Overview
What it is
An abscess is a pocket of infection — a boil that has grown painful, swollen, and tender, often on the neck, armpit, groin, or buttocks. It is the body walling off an infection, and once it forms, it usually will not resolve fully until it is drained. Squeezing it at home pushes infection deeper and makes things worse; proper drainage in a clean setting with local anesthetic is both faster and safer.
