What it is
Pink eye — conjunctivitis — is inflammation of the thin membrane covering the eye and inner eyelid. It comes in three flavors: viral (the most common, extremely contagious, and the one antibiotics do not help), bacterial (needs prescription drops), and allergic (related to your allergies, not contagious). Telling them apart matters because the treatments are completely different, and so does knowing when redness is actually a more serious eye problem.
