What it is
Dehydration shows up when the body loses more fluid than it takes in — stomach viruses with vomiting and diarrhea are the classic cause, along with heat exposure, fever, and simply not drinking enough during illness. Mild dehydration resolves with patient oral rehydration; moderate dehydration responds beautifully to IV fluids, often within an hour. Knowing when home care has failed and fluids are needed is the judgment call we make every visit.
