Overview

What it is

A fracture is a broken bone — including the hairline cracks that are easy to dismiss as a bad bruise. Wrists, ankles, fingers, and collarbones take the most falls and collisions. The good news: most simple fractures do not need an emergency room. What they do need is an accurate x-ray diagnosis, proper immobilization, and the right follow-up, all of which can happen in a single urgent care visit.

Symptoms

Common symptoms

Swelling and bruising over the bone
Inability to bear weight or use the limb normally
Tenderness precisely over one spot on the bone
Visible deformity or abnormal angle in some breaks
A grinding feeling when the limb moves
