How To Choose A Family Clinic Or An Urgent Care?

Many patients never think about choosing a primary care Doctor until they or their children are injured or suddenly become sick. Here’s how to find a Doctor who’s trustworthy, competent and reliable.

1. Look for a family clinic that treats the whole family.
The practice you choose should be able to treat every member of your family and also address the group as a whole. Family doctors are trained to recognize and deal with the emotional, social and psychological factors that affect the well-being of patients and their families both physically and mentally. To handle all the issues that may affect your family, the doctor should have completed intensive training in internal medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, obstetrics, gynecology and general surgery.

2. Do your research.
Instead of blindly choosing a doctor out of the phone book, limit your search to only those who have been highly recommended & close by to your home.

3. Assess your family's needs.
Before selecting a clinic or doctor, carefully assess your family's needs. Do any family members require advanced care or have any been diagnosed with a long-term or serious illness? If the answer is yes, make sure your chosen doctor has experience in these areas and can provide adequate care.

4. Review the doctor's education.
The family physician should have graduated from an accredited medical school, completed a residency program and received extensive training in a variety of fields. The doctor should also participate in continuing education courses and conferences to stay up to date on the most recent medical developments and be certified by American Board of their specialty.

5. Consider the clinic's convenience.
The doctor and clinic should be easily accessible for your family. Are the office hours convenient for your family's work and school schedule? Is the office easy to reach from work or home?

6. Visit the clinic.
You can gain valuable information about a practice over the phone, but visiting a clinic in person gives you the opportunity to observe the staff and setting first-hand. While at the clinic, take note of its appearance. Is it clean, comfortable and welcoming? Also consider the attitude of the staff. Are they friendly, engaging and willing to help? The answers to these questions can help you find the clinic that is right for your family.
